Technical Director
"It was a pleasure meeting with you at the International Dam Safety Conference in Bhubaneswar.
Please find attached my presentation slides and my paper. It was a very well managed conference with a lot of interesting content.
I am looking forward to discuss further how we can further develop good Emergency Action Plans."

"It was a great pleasure to meet you at the excellent International Dam Safety Conference in Bhubaneswar. The. Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, the Central Water Commission, Director Pramod Narayan, and all of the staff involved in organising the conference are to be congratulated for the excellent venue, logistics and technical program. It was an honour to be invited to present the Theme Paper on Global Best Practices in Dam Safety Management and Governance.

One of the most significant highlights of the Conference in my view was the confirmation by the World Bank of assistance for Phase II (upcoming) and Phase Ill (future) of the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project. On the basis of experience at BC Hydro where we have been pursuing major dam rehabilitation, renewal and improvement projects for a number of years , the value, in terms of dam safety and operational effectiveness, of this important work cannot be underestimated. "I first want to thank you and CWC for inviting me to IDSC 2019 and giving me the opportunity of getting exposed to the current challenges in dam safety in India. Also many thanks for accommodation and other logistics arrangements, as well as for the social program; this was superb.

Through the presentations and exchanges during the conference as well as by attending the 39th meeting of the National Committee on Dam Safety (thank you for arranging that I may attend!), I could appreciate how much work and effort is being put into enhancing dam safety in India. The fact that the financing of the next phase of DRIP is secured is certainly a success for CWC – and rightly so. From my attendance of the meeting of the National Committee on Dam Safety, I suspect that some of the challenges ahead may come from the fact that India is a federation of states. This is, at least, a situation I was confronted with as Commissioner for dam safety here in Switzerland when it came to taking the smaller dams under the federal dam safety legislation. Overcoming this difficulty was less a technical issue than a communication one.

I would be pleased to assist CWC in matters of dam safety in the future should you have any interest. Also, let me know if you come to Switzerland; I would be pleased to see you again at this occasion."

"I recently attended, presented, and co-chaired a technical session at the India Dam Safety Conference 2019 in Bhubaneswar, and I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the significant value the conference offered me from a professional and personal level.

With over 30 countries represented, the meaningful sharing of varied perspectives contributed to robust discussions of real value. Also, utilizing the theme of the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Program as a framework for discussions was a great idea as it offers a modern, state-of-the-practice program approach that is risk informed. Approval of phases 2 and 3 is evidence of DRIP’s success.

DRIP is an exciting, important program that will be a significant model for other countries in the world to follow. As someone who has had a similar experience of implementing risk on a large scale, I offer my congratulations and encouragement to continue in this direction. Getting to know Mr. Pramod Narayan, DRIP Director, was important and helpful, and I look forward to assisting our friend India in any way I can."

"This was an excellent international dam safety conference in India. The dam safety work in India as part of the DRIP program is truly a world-class venture led by the Indian Government and supported by the World Bank. Congratulations to all!"

"Wonderful opportunity to meet with experts from 30 different countries. Once again egis and its dedicated staff showed their capacities to accompany CWC in this great event. We can be proud of what we accomplished in the last five years on DRIP Project for the sake of the Dams in India."
